Ever wonder just how powerful a dog's nose is? Dogs can detect substances at concentrations of one part per trillion—that would be like a single drop of liquid in 20 Olympic-size swimming pools. Now you know!
Scent Work is a captivating dog sport that celebrates the joy of sniffing, allowing dogs to indulge in their natural instincts while participating in a rewarding training game.
In this class, both the dog and handler will work together to discover hidden target odors. The handler must trust their dog and follow their nose to achieve success. In AKC Scent Work, dogs search for cotton swabs infused with essential oils like Birch, Anise, Clove, and Cypress. These swabs are cleverly concealed within a designated search area, and the dog must use their keen sense of smell to locate them.
Teamwork is essential in this sport (yes, it actually IS a competitive sport!). Once the dog discovers the scent, they must communicate their find to the handler, showcasing an impressive partnership. It’s truly remarkable to see how a dog can demonstrate abilities that far surpass our own!
